Fequently Asked Questions

Rectangle or Square Pool: Length x Width x Average Depth x 7.5
Round Pool: Diameter x Diameter x Average Depth x 5.9
Oval Pool: Full Length x Full Width x Average Depth x 6.7
Kidney Shape Pool: Average Width x Overall Length x Average Depth x 7.0
*average depth is the shallow depth end plus the depth of the deep end divided by 2
PH: is potential Hydrogen, A measure of how acidic or basic your water is. PH of 7.0 is neutral. Pool water should be kept slightly basic: PH 7.2 – 7.8.
An oxidizer that burns off organic wastes which cause cloudiness and algae. It’s a generic term for a chemical used to oxidize waste.
Algae are a small plant life which grows in pool water. It comes in green, yellow, and black. Slimy in texture. Yellow and black are the hardest to kill.
Do the bucket test: Place a bucket a few inches into the water on a step or ladder
in the pool. Add water to the bucket until it is even with the level of the pool water
around it. Mark the pool water level on the outside and inside of the bucket. Secure
the bucket on the step so it remains in the pool and stays the same temperature as
the pool water. Wait a day or so. Compare the level of the pool to the level of the
bucket. If the pool level is lower, you may have a leak.
Check air leaks or for any cracks in the skimmer on any of the hoses or strainer on the filter. Make sure the strainer cover is seated properly and the O-ring is in good condition. Once you have established it is not an air bound problem you should clean the filter. Chemically treat the filter with an acid solution. Change cartridge or sand.
Proper filtration can be achieved by running your pool filter 6 – 8 hours a day.
Floc is added to the water to coagulate particles that cause haze and cloudiness. Add directly to the skimmer.
Organic waste is debris such as microorganisms, perspiration, urine etc., which need to burn up or oxidized to prevent haze, algae or chloramines.
Total chlorine is the total amount of chlorine in the water. It includes both free available and combined chlorine.
Free chlorine is the amount of chlorine still available for sanitizing purposes in your pool. This differs from the total amount of chlorine and must be tested for independently.
A chemical used to remove haze from water. Usually works by causing small particles to join together so the filter can pick them up.
Total Alkalinity is a measure of how resistant ph is to change. A low total alkalinity level will cause the ph to fluctuate drastically whenever small amounts of acid or base are added to the pool water. A high total alkalinity level will make the water more susceptible to scale or high ph. The proper level would be 80-150 P.P.M.
Algaecide is a strong chemical which kills algae and stops it from blooming.
